Telegram QR code generator

Anyone who scans a Telegram QR code from this generator lands in a chat with you, built from nothing but your username. The same t.me link format works for a public channel or group as well as a person.

Editable codes are saved to a free account. Two are free to try.

What a Telegram QR code opens

Telegram usernames are public by design - anyone who knows yours can already message you without your phone number, and a t.me QR code just hands that same address to a camera instead of a keyboard.

What your Telegram username QR code actually opens

Type a username and the generator strips any leading @, then builds a t.me link from it - Telegram's own short domain for opening a chat straight from a browser or the app. The same address format works for a public channel or group too, not just a person.

What a username turns into
https://t.me/rowan_vale
  1. https://t.me/ Telegram's own short link domain - opens the app directly if it's installed, or a preview page in the browser if not.
  2. rowan_vale the username exactly as typed, minus the @ - the generator adds its own.

Username rules that decide what fits

Telegram username character rules
RuleWhat Telegram allows
Length5 to 32 characters
CharactersLetters a-z, numbers 0-9 and underscores
StartMust start with a letter, never a digit or underscore
EndCan't end with an underscore
Double underscoreNot allowed - two underscores in a row
32 characters, the longest a Telegram username - and so a t.me link - can be

A username under 5 characters is reserved for Telegram itself, which is why very short handles are never available to regular accounts.

Breaks

t.me/@rowan_vale

Works

t.me/rowan_vale

The @ belongs on the username inside Telegram's own search, not in the link - keeping it breaks the address.

Where a t.me QR code is worth printing

Community group flyer

Northwind Makers prints their group's code on the workshop noticeboard, so members join the group chat without hunting for a link in an old email.

Channel sign-up in print

A print ad for Ember Fest carries the code for its announcements channel, so readers get lineup updates before tickets go on sale.

Support desk card

A small shop prints its owner's username on a card by the till for customers who'd rather message a question than call.

Telegram QR code questions

Yes - a public channel or group has the same kind of t.me link as a person, so its username works in the same field.

No - with or without the @, the generator strips it and builds the t.me link from the rest.

This generator's field is built for a username; Telegram also supports phone-number links in the t.me/+number format, but they only open a chat if the number's privacy settings allow it.

No - the link is built from the username at the time you make the code, so a later change means making a new one.

They're alternate domains Telegram runs for the same links; either one opens the same chat, and this generator always builds the t.me version.
