URL QR code generator

This URL QR code generator turns any web address into a code that opens it with one scan. Paste the link, download PNG or SVG, and print - it is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser.

Editable codes are saved to a free account. Two are free to try.

What happens between the print and the page

A website QR code is the shortest road from paper to a page: a poster, a label or a slide carries the link, and a phone camera opens it. Nothing is installed and nobody types an address.

The code itself is simple; the decisions around it are what make it work - whether the link may ever change, how long it is, and whether you checked it before the print run.

A QR code for a link, in one line

When you make a QR code for a link, the address you paste is the whole message: it is written into the pattern character for character, so going from URL to QR code takes a single step. The phone decodes it and offers to open it in the browser.

  1. You paste bloomcafe.example/spring-menu
  2. The code stores https://bloomcafe.example/spring-menu
  3. The phone shows A banner with the address, then the page
Include https:// when you paste. Most phones add it for you, but a full address removes any guesswork about which site opens.

Fixed link or editable link

Decide this before printing: it is the only choice you cannot undo with a new download.

A fixed code holds your full address, so it keeps working even if qrabbit.net is ever unreachable. An editable code holds a short qrabbit link that forwards to your address, which is what lets you change the destination and count scans later.

Rule of thumb: if the page address is permanent - your home page, a product page - a fixed code is simpler and outlives any service. If the address will move - a seasonal menu, a campaign, a PDF that gets replaced - print an editable one and change where it points instead of reprinting.

Price, expiry and scan analytics for both kinds are compared side by side on the QR code generator page.

Why a short link makes a better code

Every character adds modules - the small squares - so a long address with tracking parameters produces a denser pattern. Printed at the same size, a denser code has smaller squares, and an older phone or a quick glance from a distance struggles to read it.

Paste an address into the box to see how large the grid gets. Anything above roughly 60 x 60 modules deserves a larger print or a shorter link.

Short

Same page, a quarter of the characters: the code drops from a 61 x 61 grid to 33 x 33.

Before the print run: a five-minute check

  1. Open the link on a phone

Not on the laptop you built the page on: the page has to work on a small screen and on mobile data.

  2. Scan the downloaded file, not the preview

Print one copy at the final size and scan it from where people will stand.

  3. Keep contrast high

Dark squares on a light background; a light code on a dark background confuses some older scanners.

  4. Leave a margin

The white border round the code is part of it - give it at least four squares of space on every side.

  5. Say what it opens

A line such as 'Scan for the spring menu' under the code gets more scans than a code alone.

Need the code on a poster or a flyer you already have? Add it to an image or place it on a PDF without opening a design app.

Grid sizes assume byte mode and error correction level Q, which this generator uses; adding a logo raises it to H and the grid grows.

Questions about the link QR code generator

A static code never expires: the address is inside the pattern. It stops being useful only if the page it points to goes away. A dynamic code keeps working while its short link is active.

Only with a dynamic code. Switch the generator to Dynamic before downloading, and you can re-point it from your account later.

At the error correction this generator uses, a QR code holds up to about 1,270 characters, but a code that full is hard to scan. Keep links short; the calculator above shows the grid size.

A static code cannot: it goes straight to your address. A dynamic code counts scans by day, country and device, without identifying people.

SVG for print, because it stays sharp at any size; PNG for documents, slides and social posts.
